Kate Perry vs Islam

Oh dear GOD, spare us all from the ridiculousness of your followers. And when the ridiculousness of your followers collides with the ridiculousness of modern pop music, it just gets doubly ridiculous!

Case in point, the latest thing to piss off some Muslims, the fact that in Katy Perry's new, pathetically bad, ancient Egyptian themed music video for 'Dark Horse'. It shows a man being turned into sand. For some reason, this ancient Egyptian man is wearing a necklace that says 'Allah' in Arabic, even though Islam wasn't invented until centuries later. But, really, it doesn't matter. It's a music video. It's not meant to be a history lesson.

Here's what has some people pissed off. At 1:15 min into the video, the man (I believe it's "rapper" Juicy J?) wearing the necklace is turned into sand. The necklace, as well, is turned into sand. Now, you can't even notice the fact that he is wearing this particular necklace unless you actually pause the video and look for it at that point. Someone apparently did. And, now people are mad saying that Katy Perry has insulted Islam, interpreting the fact that the man turns into sand as him burning and thus the name of Allah being burned.

Now, there are a number of issues here, as far as I am concerned. First off, people are more upset that a necklace is turned into sand than a man turned into sand. Mind you, he isn't really turned into sand, nor is the necklace, it is merely fancy dancy special effects. So, not to worry, the necklace survives in the end. Hate to spoil that bit of music video wizardry for people. I know people know that, and see it as a symbolic 'insult' to Islam as opposed to believing the necklace was turned into sand, but, quite frankly, it's funny. It's funny how the 'symbolic' destruction of a human gets not concern, but the 'symbolic' destruction of a necklace does, merely because of it's shape.

Okay, fine, you know what, we know that some Muslims, and I stress SOME Muslims, get completely bent out of shape over anything perceived as an 'insult' to their religion, no matter how slight it may be. Most will walk away from this feeling possibly a bit mad. Some on social media, however, are demanding YouTube take down the video, ban it, say they hate that 'bitch' (interesting, seeing as swearing is haram in Islam), saying they will never listen to her again and people should boycott her. Now, fine, if you don't want to listen to her again, that's your choice. But, I think calling for an outright ban of a video for something that cannot even be seen without pausing it, or because the perception some have is that it is an 'insult' to Islam is going a bit too far. And, to me, it's all ridiculous.

I do get very tired of this demanding of respect for religion. I believe I have mentioned it before. Demanding respect for a homophobic, genocidal, ego-maniacal, sexist, arrogant, demanding god is a bit rich. Mind you, it's god. It doesn't exist. But, people believe it not only exists but MUST be respected. Well.....no. I don't agree with that. If something does not exist it isn't worthy of ANYTHING. It doesn't exist. Period. But, if we go for some notion that this god does exist, the idea that we should automatically, without question respect it is....well....ridiculous. Now, the demand is to respect the religion and not insult the god, prophet or followers. Welllllll, wait a minute. This is the same religion that says I am going to burn in a fiery hell for eternity for not believing in it. I'm supposed to respect this belief?? It's the same religion that condemns gays for being, you know, gay. I'm supposed to respect this belief?? No. Sorry. I can't do that. And no one should feel obligated to respect something they don't feel respectful of. Now, that doesn't mean I'm running out and burning Qurans on the corner. It just means that when something like this comes up, I want to scream out BULLSHIT, deal with it, when people get bent out of shape over an image that lasts a millisecond! And, the best place to do that, of course, is on social media, where we all scream out everything we want to scream out anyway.

So, here is the deal. If you are mad that Katy Perry's very bad video for a very bad song has a millisecond where Allah's name get's turned into dust because it is on a man who is turned to dust, who isn't actually turned to dust, nor the name, then, fine. It's your prerogative. But, really? Seriously? Honestly? Give me a break. Is it really worth being that upset about? I got it, your ultra sensitive about your religion because imams and scholars keep DRIVING into people's heads that these things are insulting. But, I keep seeing kids, not very old, saying how Katy Perry has disgraced Islam. Well, what? Is it really THAT big of deal in your early teens? Who is instructing you to see this millisecond of video as so highly offensive that it should be banned? It seems to me that the propaganda and dogma within ultra conservative interpretations of the religion is being blasted into the minds of young kids who just repeat what their imams, parents and scholars (a term I use loosely) as opposed to really feeling the deep insult that they report they feel. But, at the same time, who am I to say who should be insulted by what.

But, frankly, if we are talking about banning videos, oh dear GAWD this is no shortage of Islamic assholes attacking the West, atheists, Christians, Jews, Israel, gays and lesbians, and whatever else they can completely lay hate on, and yet it's this Katy Perry video that people want taken down? Give me a break, people. Spare me. It's too rich, to ridiculous, in my view. You don't have to like the video. I don't like the video or the song. But, it is what it is, and the millions of Katy Perry fans out there love it, so more power to them. And, if your god gets angry about a necklace shaped into it's name being turned to dust in a music video, then that is a scary god that I want nothing to do with! That is not a loving god. That is a vengeful, angry, spiteful, self loving, arrogant god that is spending too much time focused on a millisecond of video and not enough time on saving sick children. Please, keep that god away from me, because frankly, that god is an asshole.

  1. It is not a 'symbolic' destruction of a necklace, it is our GOD that is 'Allah'. Just imagine that we burned your 'jesus' necklace. What do u feel? Happy with it? And one more thing, Palestin didn't attack Israel. Israel that attack them, watch the news please. And get a map, is there such country or place is belong to Israel?

    3. What?? That is quite the interesting interpretation of that. Wow. How you took a millisecond where a necklace with the name Allah on it turning to dust means that Katy Perry is out to destroy god (who doesn't exist) is remarkably odd.

  2. How can you, a non-religious person, make a comment about something that really only a religious person (with a wide history of religious persecution) can understand? If you knew anything about and/or cared for the concept of respect, which you claim not to, then you would understand this. Not to mention your comparisons are absolutely illogical, and your rude argument is completely riddled with fallacy.

  3. Fortunately, there are many Muslims who don't feel offended. Or, if they do, they aren't out to ban the video and are able to handle this in a mature and rational fashion. Unfortunately, there are those that get a bit too worked up over the slightest thing and will continue to do so over and over. In this post, I stated that if someone wants to be offended, it's up to them. I can't decide what offends people. BUT, do I think the offense is blown out of proportion? Yes, I do. Is it because I am not Muslim? I like to think that even if I was a Muslim, I would take this situation with a grain of salt, understanding that god is bigger than getting offended over such a tiny, tiny thing.

  4. Again, swearing is haram. All of these people I see swearing about Katy Perry's video make me laugh! Your god orders you NOT to swear, yet you blatanly ignore that statement, essentially spitting in your god's face. You've completely gone against his wishes and commands, and in doing so have completely disrespected him. So, what is the difference exactly?

  9. Well lets see if katy parry starts beheading young child and eats them.

I bet these so called "champion of free speech" will go bonkers saying its promoting violence and child violence.

But if u are still supporting such act then u are a sick person.

we muslims respect and care the symbol as much as we care the image of our close family members, our child, our siblings, our spouse and such anybody would be angry if some desperate singer trying to gain more views by depicting "controversial" scene.

Such insta-publicity usually done by artists that lacks creativity. Jumble all controversial symbols into one and starts raking up the cheap publicity in quantity.

Well thats what u get from a typical mainstream artists.

You have every right to feel angry. I just feel that some of this has gotten out of hand and the demanding of respect for religion and the banning of the video is a tad over the top. But, that is my view. You are free to have your own view.

  10. I would rephrase your words "was wearing a necklace that said GOD in Arabic".
No dear, Its the name of GOD for Muslims all around the world - "Allah" in arabic.
In other religions, people are okay if a movie or figures represent their GODS/Prophets.
In Islam, its not allowed and such representations are acts of extreme sin.
I'm sure however, katy or costume designer may not have idea of it. Hence, If sth hurts a race or ethnicity, its decency to have at least that part of the scene removed.
Esp since its creating different races/religions to fight, argue, swear and what not.

  11. Many muslims who dont feel offended because they are not practising their own religion. btw, god do exist, if not who created the world? sun and the moon? who created the animals? the chicken and eggs? have you thought about it? if you translate allah to english it meant GOD. its not just a necklace, why allah? if it were Jesus name, will christians be offended? even muslim will feel offended. He created the world and things around you yet you think he dont exist? May God show you the way. Have a great day :)

  12. If muslims all over are being offended, why not respect that?
I mean, freedom of speech is one thing, but sth which is creating different religions/ different beliefs to fight over it, swearing of all religions and youtube get up into other hating muslims and muslims hating katy, raise sensitive world issues on israel-palestine and make you say what islam does wrong to justify katy's video - enough a reason to rub that scene off dont you think?

i would have reacted the same if some arabic weirdo "symbolically" burned a pope in his music video or some english racist "symbolically" burn a guy because he's black.

There may be muslims doing wrong over other issues/write-up against freedom etc but America believes in freedom of speech as well has provides equal rights to everyone's sentiments. It is with that decency and their judgment to differentiate right-wrong and not hurt other race, they might as well remove that bit of the scene.
I agree with you that its hardly noticeable. It may be trivial if no one noticed, but since some did, many now know and fighting like hell and you wrote a whole article about it, its surely an issue which needs to be taken care of.
    Peace! :)

    1. You're missing the point here. Muslims are starting up a petitions trying to force this clip to be taken down just because of their own beliefs. And death threats and sexists remarks are all being encouraged and used loosely. Do you think it's cool for people to say " KILL THAT KATY PERRY BITCH WHORE, I WILL SHOOT HER" " SHE'S A FUCKING SLUT, HOW DARE SHE INSULT ISLAM" etc Freedom of speech is one thing but death threats is another. Some of these comments are made by adults, they should take responsibilities of their own emotions. If they have a problem with a stupid clip they should just not watch it. Petitions over this petty crap is appalling. Seriously those people should complain about things that actually matters.

    2. I'm not saying that people don't have the right to be offended. They do. It's up to them. From my perspective, the issue has gotten a bit out of control with a petition now going around to have the video banned, meanwhile there are no shortage of videos by hateful Islamic preachers that no one talks about. So, there is hypocrisy there. Keep in mind, this is just my view. Those who are going to petition are still going to petition no matter what I say. To me, it's gotten a bit ridiculous. That's all I can speak for is me from my perspective.

    1. The point is, unless you are obeying your god and doing what he/she/it/they command you to do, you are disrespecting the god anyway. So, getting mad at someone else when you aren't even following the instructions of the god is ridiculous. THAT is the point. Of course, NO one is perfect. Nothing is perfect. That is the point! If someone is swearing when their religion forbids it, aren't they being completely disrespectful to the religion? And given that, isn't it rather rich to get mad at someone else disrespecting the religion when you are doing it to? I don't expect anyone from any religion to do anything. Do what you want. The point is, don't be a hypocrite about it. If you are doing wrong, focus on what you are doing wrong and don't worry what other people are doing or not doing that will get them to hell or heaven or paradise or wherever it is you think they will go.

"Respect" does not mean you have to approve of something but it means to leave it alone if you do not agree and be kind to one another despite of differences. People have different beliefs, opinion, cultures, religion, even sex life. Just leave them alone as long as they are positive and they don't bother you. However, if you use their symbols, mock the symbols they valued the most in their belief, what do you expect them to react?????? If someone burned your parent's photo in front of you, how would you react??? are you still going to talk about respect?????

    4. What about those that don't believe in anything who want to enjoy a music video. The problem is just because one group is offended doesn't mean the video should be taken down.

    5. your absolutely right that is the fault of the music industry and the producers of that clip, they hat to know better that Muslims would see that... there not dumb they knew what they were doing (Music Industry)....

    6. The point is, I do find a number of aspects of Islam offensive. The Quran spends most of it's time telling me how much of an idiot I am for not believing in Allah, while saying I'm going to burn in a fiery hell. THAT is offensive, my friend. So, demanding respect for a religion that shows utter contempt for me is pretty rich. A religion is a set of ideas, not an entity. WIthin the religion, quite frankly, there are some bad ideas, from my perspective. So, no, I don't have respect for institutionalized homophobia, sexism, elitism, or fascism. So, no, don't tell me about respecting anything. I don't hate anyone based solely on the fact that they follow a religion. BUT, it's perfectly okay to hate a religion or a set of ideas.

    7. What I understand is that you can read Arabic or not??? you are telling that Al Qur'an is telling you that you will burn in hell if you not belief in Allah, to understand Al Qur'an you have to speak and understand the Arabic language very well and you can not do that by traveling or living for 5 years only in Muslim country's... you can not translate Al-Qur'an in a other language because some words in Arabic have not the same meanings if translated, you say you have much knowledge about Islam but i think you don't have: sorry to say that.. and I quote you: it's perfectly okay to hate a religion or a set of ideas... did you get bullied a lot on school or on the streets???... to me you sound like a very hate full person, that don't like much.. and i think also if you travel sooooo much to other country's how can it be that you don't understand other people and culture's???.. and for your education I google this for you, there are 5 difference of Islam, they are not tribes but practice in a other way in Islam : 1. Sunni. 2. Shi'a. 3. Wahhabi. 4. Salafi. 5. Bohras.... don't confuse them with one.. do your research good and don't blame a view Imams for what they are saying because there are many Muslim people that don't think the same like them (Imams) and belief in Allah and read Al-Qur'an everyday.... O ya, to disagree or hate are not the same buddy...

    8. P.S. you have to look in the mirror Manic because first you say you don't feel offended by Al-Qur'an then you feel offended by some things because in your interpretation, again I quote you: The Quran spends most of it's time telling me how much of an idiot I am for not believing in Allah, while saying I'm going to burn in a fiery hell. THAT is offensive, my friend. If you don't believe, then that is the point it cloud not hurt you!!! so why you feel offended...??? really, you speak double tongues... and your arguments are weak plus not adjudicated.... I know Al-Qur'an and it does not say you will burn in hell but you would not be aloud in Heaven, that is a BIG different meaning buddy so don't give your own spin to it like those Imams do.....!!!!

    9. No. It says I'm going to hell....over and over and over and over. It spends much of it's time devoted to how much of a fool I am for not believing and how I as a non believer am on the wrong path and ignoring Allah can lead to horrible, horrible things for me. Besides, as an advocate for LGBT rights and someone who looks at some practises within Islam and don't agree with them and speak against them, then I am assured a ticket to hell, and the Quran makes this perfectly clear....over, and over and over and over and over. Look, I am not saying you can't be offended by the video. My point is, we all get offended by things. The question is, if we are going to ban this video based on YOUR offenses, then should we ban Islam based on what offends me? I mean there are NO shortage of videos by asshole imams and "scholars" and other religious jerks who say horrible hateful things that no one seems to be starting a petition over. Yet, a video with a millisecond of a symbol being turned to ash on a HUMAN that turns to ash has people screaming? Come on. Let's be realistic. It is what it is...simply an object. Your god speaks against worshiping objects or putting them on the same level as Allah. It is just a material item. This distraction and the anger towards it shows you aren't even listening to your own god. If you don't listen to your own god, why on earth should we take you seriously? Focus on how YOU serve your god. If you find this video offensive, hey, that's your right. It's up to you. No one can tell you what you should or should not be offended by. But, from MY perspective, which is what I wrote this piece from, I see some, SOME, of the backlash against this to be comical and ridiculous. But, that is my take on it from my perspective.

    1. You do target things that are precious to me. LGBT rights, gender equality, science and the core idea of evolution, democracy, atheism....

The Quran and the religion and too many of it's scholars, imams, etc, make no bones how about how evil I am for my beliefs and how wrong I am.

Heck, Islam even does a good job of insulting every other religion out there with it's assertation that Islam is the only true religion, that the deeply held believes of a few billion Christians, the fact that Jesus is the son of god is rubbish and that Christians lost their way....guess what....highly offensive and attacking the beliefs of others.

  41. You guys realize that if we applied what you're saying, then gays, or Christians (or anyone really) wouldn't be able to be hurt, or killed in movies. There's tolerance, then there's this. Let's not allow the world to be consumed with these petty things or pretty soon we'll all be walking on egg shells.

  43. Why is the author mixing her own feelings about Islamic doctrine (which is the same as Jewish and Christian doctrine) while the topic is about Katy Perry deliberately picks the Arab word for God to be "symbolically" turned into ash/sand? From al the words in the Arab language, miss perry picks the one word that is respected among believers. So because of disapproval of a faith that you don't like because you think you're going to hell (How is that Islams fault if you're the one believing in that), you approve of depicting Holy words in a video only to destroy it? No Muslim has made a music video about you or an LGBT person being burned in hell as part of "ART". So stop your bulshitting, if you target peoples beliefs, then you're just clearly in the wrong.

    1. Spot on!!! from all of the believes and Arabic words the producers picked that Holy word, the producers did it on purpose to start something, this was not art... this was pure to insult the Islamic world...

    2. Again, thanks for making a point here. Swearing is haram. Your god commands you not to swear. But you did. Therefore you aren't even following the commands of your god which means you are disrespecting it/he/she or whatever. So, how can you get mad at anyone else for "disrespecting" your god? And, why exactly should we show respect to a homophobic, egomaniacal, sexist, angry, vengeful, genocidal, arrogant, demanding, petty god? The Quran targets my beliefs quite clearly. Shall we ban the Quran? It contradicts many of my deep held beliefs. If we are banning things, how about we start there? And, of course, other religions have no shortage of offensive ideas within them. I am not defending those over Islam. This just happens to be a case where Islam is at the forefront so we are talking about Islam. It's just funny how we are supposed to respect religion, when religious teachings don't seem to respect anyone but those that follow the religion. You yourself are basically saying I am going to hell for not following the demands of your god, and it is my fault for doing so. That is pretty offensive, no? So, I propose we ban all religions that say that others who don't follow the religion will go to hell. Interestingly enough, between all these religions, everyone on the planet is going to hell...:) Hmmmm. Interesting. All this loving, peaceful religious stuff is making sure that we all burn in a fiery afterworld for eternity! Ahhhh, the beauty of religion.

    3. It's shows me now what kind of person you are because you don't read or understand or study the Arabic language, that shows me that you totally didn't travel in the Arabic world for 5 years (don't lie buddy, it makes you look not educated and cheap as a writer) , otherwise you wouldn't say again and again the same weak argument about burning in Hell because you try to put does view Imams (maybe 5 or 6) with the other thousands of other Imams that don't preach the same way... that tells a story about you! you put all Muslims in one pocket so that makes you a prejudices and a racist.. I thank you for showing your true inside....

  44. Everything pisses off Muslims! They're the most insecure religion on planet earth. But I admit the director should have given more thought especially being that the theme of the video was supposed to mimic ancient Egypt prior to Islamic religious dominance over that region! Which in turn does give validity to their grievance!

  45. Anyway, all commentors, I appreciate your comments. Just an update. Apparently, Katy Perry has officially had the offensive millisecond of video removed. Now, the video is no longer offensive to Muslims...just people who like good music and well done music videos. Is everyone now happy? Can we all carry on until the next major offensive thing that comes along? Maybe tomorrow some new cartoon will pop up! Yay!
